Why do we itch?

We itch because the nerve endings in our skin send a signal to our brain as a defense mechanism against anything that might cause possible harm. For example, if I get some dust on my skin my nerve endings will send a signal to my brain telling it that I have an itch.  There are other ways to trigger the nerve endings response to the brain. Another way to get an itch are from allergies, disease, emotions and infections.
